Fishing Report
You can see the level in the Inlet, the temperature of the water and the conductivity by the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority Link. The entrance has closed and the water level is over 1 m.
The new Junior Competition has commenced so make sure your junior fishing buddies are registered before you go out fishing. Prizes to be won include $150 for the longest bream and longest flathead. The township has livened up over the past week and there have been up to 20 boats out fishing. The wind has been from the east and often very windy although today is perfect. Some anglers have been fishing from the main fishing platform designed and built in 2011 by the Bemm River Angling Club with a grant from Fisheries Victoria and one person landed a 75 cm flathead.
I fished on Friday leaving at about 10 am and fished one area near the river mouth in shallow water. The wind was an easterly which is normally not good for fishing. The equal best fish was a luderick of 37 cm which gave an exciting fight. There were many small bream about but there were some good-sized fish amongst them. I ended up with 7 bream up to 35 cm having released heaps of bream in the 16-28 cm range and having to retie many hooks. Six of my bream were females and one male all ripe ready to spawn. I was trying to mouth hook the bream but the smaller ones seemed to swallow the hook. I finished fishing at 2:00 pm but the best fishing has been later in the afternoon after 3:30 pm. I will add a picture in the next few days taken of 6 of my fish.
Most of the spawning bream have left the river although one chap spent 6 hours in the upper section of the river and landed 6 good bream. Another chap caught a nice bream under the bridge below the waterfall. Others I spoke to indicated variable results with one bag of 8 bream seeming to contain mainly just sized fish. They had worked the shallows area from Swan Lake entrance round to Mud Lake.
The best bait for bream is currently sandworm and unfortunately Mark at Bemm River Bait and Tackle is unable to pump them with the high water.
There are salmon trapped in the channel when the entrance closed and are fun on lures and plastics. There are also a few flathead around at this early stage, indicating that the flathead should be really on this Christmas. There have also been a few eels caught which can slim up your net or boat, but they can be cooked by cleaning, skinning, boiling in water, cut into sections, battered and fried. The best option is to keep them for gummy shark bait.
